So, here it is, the lie. "We're cancelling the show at the Bridge because we're not getting enough breakfast business, therfore, we cannot support our evening patrons with free music."

And now, the revealed truth "We really don't like your music and think that the crowd you'll draw won't be beneficial for the environment we're trying to create here, therefore we're cancelling the show so you don't make us look bad".

If they only knew the amount of money they'd make because of us, they wouldn't incriminate us before understanding the draw we receive. Unfortuntely, and commonly, Metal music is viewed in a very narrow scope.

So folks, we've been relegated to a true Open Mic Night, where they can't refuse us, and can simply make the excuse of "They didn't tell us they were that brutal" or "We didn't know what they sounded like" and get away with not paying us for our time and save their reputation minutely. Little do they realize, what we have online is nothing to what we've become. So perpare yourselves, August 2nd, Eternal Embrace will blow out the windows of the Bridge Cafe, Metal Night at the Bridge or not.

I feel like I'm living a split life. On one side, it's fucking chaos and megalithic sadness, on the other, windows of opportunity are opening everywhere. The band is flourishing right now, the musicians are sinking up with chemistry. The singers are getting excited and are making more of an effort to become part of the whole. We're getting noticed by many people and shows are being offered left and right. Despite my frustration with not being able to get the band to become an entity beyond your typical six piece, what we have works and is starting to sound phenomenal. All the people who keep calling saying they want to be in the band and then flaking out on us, can fucking bite me, because they will never know the heights to which we will attain.

August 9th at The Bridge Cafe on Elm Street in Manchester, Doors open at 6:30pm, All Ages.

August 16th potential show date for Dover Tattoo Convention Battle of the Bands, more to be announced.

I am getting fucking paranoid. I don't know who to trust anymore. I can't even trust the person who I thought was my best friend. My countless ads for Vocalists have yeilded shits who won't bother showing up even after they've told me numerous times that they will make it. I'm so tired of inconsistant, flakey, inconsiderate, disrespectful people. Who do they think they are, coming in and raising hopes and expectations only to dash them to the floor? Do they not understand that making music is a passion, an art, a lifestyle? If music is such a miniscule part of their existance, why do they bother at all? Where are the singers, the true people who use their voices as an instrument, and feel confident enough to make themselves heard and felt and seen? It seems to be consistant throughout humanity these days, that it's okay to be wishy washy, to lie, to falsify, to inflate, to pretend you're someone you aren't. I'm very angry right now and haven't been hiding it. We have the opportunity to play six different shows and we can't even jump on board with a ready set because of our slowed progress. I understand life factors into it, I make my allowances. I just want to know. How come, even with our busy schedules, Erik, Randy and I can always come through and others never seem to be on that same level? Why can't we find people who want what we want? This would never happen in Europe. I know it.

When does Potential become Mediocrity?

How long before what is labeled initially as "potential" becomes simply, mediocrity? In relationships, when you're dating a person who has potential, you wait and see what the person has to offer, and whether they measure up to your standards. When someone has potential in a relationship, it's initially a positive statement. I've often heard a woman say that her current beau has potential, stated with a smile and a nod of satisfaction. But when and how long into it do you decide that the relationship has lost its potential edge? As I watch women, it can take years for the decision to be made that the potential they once saw in their mates has faded, with little to no progress having been made. By this time, they may have married, had children or settled into retirement together. But in a musical situation, how long is too long to wait for the right person to come along? When if ever should you settle? Is dropping dead weight in the music industry considered a positive change or a portent to doom? It's as it is in a relationship. Is there anyone else out there for me? Will I always be alone? What if I never find the right person? Is potential ever a good word to use when entering into something? If a person has potential, does it mean they are not living up to the best they can offer, or are they simply just not what you're looking for and you've decided to settle? When does one recognize that no progress has been made and decide to move on? Is being alone better than being with something that isn't working? I would say yes in a relationship, but in a band, when there isn't anything else to choose from, is it worth it to keep working with what you have?

Erik and I are in the process of auditioning for another band called The Breaking. They were in need of a keyboardist with influences similar to my own and since Eternal Embrace is at a lull, we thought we'd go check them out. When they found out Erik was a guitarist, they asked to see what he could do. The guys are really nice and we all got along well, so Monday, we're going to go for an actual audition with the entire band and see how it goes. I'm very curious to see how another band operates, as well as possibly have a chance to improve my skills by doing music that is different from my own.

I'm a little frustrated right now and need to vent.

I feel like no one currently in Eternal Embrace, save for myself and Erik see the vision. I feel like everyone is just there because it's a band and it's good music. That isn't what I am looking for. I want people with a passion for the dream that we have for Eternal Embrace becoming something theatrical, combining world instruments and symphonic sounds to create a visual entity like nothing anyone has ever seen before. It's unfortunate that to date, the only other people who have lived this vision with me, are now no longer friends of ours and have moved on to NY, Raven and Levi, our former singers.

I have my tenticles in every possible direction looking for musicians and vocalists, six ads up on the web, a few in our local music stores. Erik has found his own niche in promotions, and he's very good at it. I think all of Londonderry know who we are and our website has gotten several hundred hits. So I have to wonder what gives.

I honestly do think it has alot to do with this country. Not just Bush, but everyone in it and the mentality that goes along with being American. Even the guys in The Breaking agree. They are the first people we found that come close to being passionate about their music and play in the European metal style.

If I don't see some passion within my own musicians soon, I'm going to have to change the direction of how I manage them. So far, I've kind of just let them feel their way through and come up with their own stuff, but I may have to begin controlling the environment quite a bit more if I don't start getting what Eternal Embrace deserves.

A Rough Week

Work has been hell and I've been depressed. Even though things are moving along I'm suddenly feeling blocked musically. I haven't written a new song in a while and the one I'm working on is coming slow. I'll be excited when we get together to jam next weekend, as we now have a second guitarist and possibly some singers coming to meet us. I really enjoy the energy that can be exchanged between musicians, sometimes when there is an immediate connection it can be thrilling. Some really diverse material can come of it. I remember when I first got together with Wulf, from Shadowlounge, the connection was intense, and it was the first time I ever played keyboards, it was a Korg. I was auditioning to sing with his band, but he put me on keys first to see what we could come up with together. "Caught in the Middle" was our first take. It was simple, but it was also very catchy too. That's a key component, if you can remember a riff and it plays over and over in your brain days after it's created, it's a keeper. From there, Wulf showed me his own keyboard prowess and I came up with "Catacombs" on vocals, it was haunting and though the keyboard lines were to me complex at the time, later, when I learned to really play, they were the most simplistic beauty I had ever heard. Reminiscing about Shadowlounge brings such good memories, I never had a more supportive mentor than in Wulf. Funny...

In Eternal Embrace, I will need to take some of the fresh spirit of starting over and pour it's essence into the music. Open it up to possibility. The sky is the limit.

Now I actually, feel better. Funny how that works.

A Satisfying Day

Yesterday we auditioned a drummer. Of the most surprising to us was that he showed, the second was that he played and the third that he played well. To have all three was a turn of events in the world of Eternal Embrace. Nonetheless, we are excited to begin working with Bill and see where this leg of the journey will lead us.

Undercurrent

Today will make the first official band rehearsal sans both drummer and our two singers. We are raw, the core of Eternal Embrace, the music writers. Will this be the end of us? Or the beginning? For the past six years we have been united, in one musical affiliation or another, the chemistry is still strong, the bond as always. Though much has transpired in the past year, nothing has changed in our feelings about the music and our drive to play on and produce something new and remarkable. We have a renewed sense of our position in the music world, our goals and desires have grown and I personally have stepped from an idealistic, new musician to a person who fully understands the ramifications of allowing mere passion to drive me. Erik has continued to improve upon his guitar technique, coming up with new ideas mingled with the old to create a full sound with a driving force mixed between a rolling coil of melodic movements. Randy as our wise old timer to the music scene, traditionally moves forward into the newness and change with a positive outlook, barely saying "I told you so".

We'll see where this next new step will take us, new scenery, new direction, new purpose.

2/17/06 The end to the Beginning, Alpha et Omega

After our drummer left the band in the Fall for personal reasons, we sought to find a new drummer with similar creative qualities, but in the American market for musicians, a drummer with a European metal style has not come out of the wood work.

In our lull, we attempted to create music with the line up that we had, Michael occasionally filling in to help us flesh out the songs we were still working on. In that time, our epic 20 minute song Snowfall and our new ambient Middle Eastern sounding sonata Ritual were the only songs left for our two singers to put lyrics to. Unfortunately, their level of commitment waned severely and they pursued a life of video gaming as opposed to music writing, lacking in focus or drive to succeed. Regrettably, we had to let them go due to their extreme lack of professionalism and commitment to the cause. These singers wrote incredible lyrics, but either they never saw their own talent or they just didn’t care, it’s unfortunate, because though there was chemistry during rehearsals, their refusal to practice outside of the rehearsal room was a detriment to the band and added to the increasing frustration of the lack of progress we were experiencing with them as the front people of Eternal Embrace.

As we move forward, I reflect on the qualities that we continuously seek to find in musicians, qualities such as integrity, focus, drive, commitment, professionalism, creativity, ingenuity, fortitude, responsibility, self sufficiency, honesty, adaptability. I have only seen this level of musicianship in three people, and these are the guys who have maintained Eternal Embrace as a band for the last two years, Randy my bassist, Erik my guitarist and Michael our former drummer. No one I’ve auditioned, and no one that I’ve fired have been able to meet these standards. It’s pretty sad and it’s very common.

I often wonder how, in Europe, the metal bands that frequently front the cover of Terrorizer Magazine manage to keep it going. Is the quality of musicianship in Europe greater than in the US? Why can’t I find other like minded musicians to join this great endeavor? Why is it so hard to get people to commit to something that could be so powerful and meaningful on so many levels?
Is it because our culture revolts against what they consider darkness? Is it because of the predominant religious focus that seems to pervade and distort every aspect of culture today? Does that prevent people from looking outside the proverbial box and realizing that not all metal music is geared toward the worship of the devil or has to be an expression of vulgarity? Whatever the case, it is getting harder and harder to find the types of people that seemed easily accessible only a few years earlier. Underground has gone underground and pulling from the dirt is getting us no where fast.

We’re from Southern, NH and have a practice space conveniently located from all major highways.

Fucking loving life right now, saw Agalloch and Green Carnation live in Toronto. Light of Day, Day of Darkness was played in its full length glory and we got Tchort's autograph. I got cut trying to grab the guitar that was smashed by the guitarist in Agalloch. The Metal scene is so tight in Toronto and we got invited to the after party with Green Carnation, November's Doom and several other bands that we're amazing. Everyone has to check out Montreal Metal band "Unexpect", sincerely and unexpected mix of Folk, Black Metal, Avante Garde and skilled classical training.

We are still looking for a drummer to fit our style, got a few prospects and maybe some hope...

Goddamn though, I have seen the best year of shows yet. Therion was amazing and totally magnanimous when we saw them in Worcester. I hope they decide to make North America part of their touring area permanantly.

Fucking Metal heads need to start coming together to unite the scene, already Daddy's has discontinued their Musician Meet and Greet night because the music scene in NH is dying...we need to fucking figure out why the underground and alternative scenes are dissappearing, fuck, even the Goth scene in Boston has been lost without Manray. You go to Toronto or Montreal and the scense are alive and kicking and no one gives a shit that they look different, here everyone is practically all the same, no one seems to value differences and if you don't conform you're shunned as a weirdo. America the fucking beautiful, but whose standard of beauty?

Drummer Auditioned

We auditioned a drummer tonight, a very fast drummer, as well as a guitarist who once played for Shroud. We've got to go down again with the singers and see how it all works as a whole band. We are officially off hiatus and now is the time to begin the process of building things back together. I can't say enough how much I miss working with Mike though, he was my drummer, it's hard to get over something that dead on. Almost every time we played with him, he could sense our energy as a band and know the grooves that were perfect with the songs. His inutition to Erik's guitar playing was finely tuned. It will be hard for someone else to fill his shoes.

Levi had a great idea, make buttons for Raven to wear to work saying "I'm a singer, I'm looking for a drummer for my band." It would be perfect advertising I think!

We're still writing though, and we produced the final copy of our demo and which if my printer was not currently posessed by a Swedish man, I would print out a bio and do up some cd art to send to get duplicated.

We're currently influenced by Therion, who we saw live at the Palladium just a few days ago. Fucking Therion is amazing, they performed so well live, I thought that I was listening to one of their albums at home. We got to speak with the bassist and lead guitarist after the show. Though it was a disapointingly small crowd, the reception that Therion got from them was fucking intense, I think they were surprised. Eighteen years to get to America! I can't beleive it. Some people think that bands like Nightwish and Therion are new because imported music is so limited in the United States and there is virtually no exposure. I feel bad for many in the metal community, especially the mainstream because there is so much more to metal than meets the eye.

Eternal Embrace, an established New Hampshire based Doom Metal band seeks a drummer. We have a pretty unique style, some of our influences include Agalloch, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Unholy, Green Carnation, In The Woods, Dimmu Borgir, Anathema and The Gathering. We have keyboards, guitar, bass and male harsh and clean vocals and female vocals. We are looking for someone creative on the drums, who can play double bass and also be able to groove at slower time signatures. We had our debut show in Boston at the Skybar in June and would be looking to play live again. We have recorded a demo in hopes of getting signed to a label. We are looking for someone as dedicated as we are to playing music. Entombed

My god, I didn't realize how much I liked Entombed until I heard their live orchestrated CD "Unreal Estate". I'm immensely impressed that two choreographers decided to ask Entombed to perform with the Royal Ballet of the Royal Opera House in Stockholm. When I first heard this, I was skeptical because Death Metal doesn't strike me as danceable per se. But after I saw the photographs and costumes and listened to the CD, after I got a visual, I was able to concede that Entomed has gained my appreciation as one of the great bands of the Northern realm. "Night of the Vampire" is a great song, I never took it seriously because of the raucous video that they performed on the Monkeypuss Live DVD, but I have new found appreciation for it and even consider doing a cover. My favorite by far is "Cheif, Rebel Angel", great song title, and intense, Lars-Goran Petrov has a fucking great death growl! I am also pleased with the keyboards that he did at the beginning of the album and the applause granted him was nothing short of a dissappointment, I would have given him more tribute personally. As a keyboardist anything that stirs my soul deeply has merit.

Amazingly, I had a dream last night that I was actually hanging out with the band. Perhaps it's been all my exposure to what metallers do in their past time that made this dream so realistic. After a show that Entombed performed in Boston, Myself, Levi and Erik, who already knew the guys, were invited to go back and party with them. While Erik and our lead singer Levi went on a beer run, I rode in the tour bus with Entombed. Once we got to their pad I was surprised that they weren't staying in a hotel, but in a greek style temple that was open to the outdoors. In front of the temple, there was a man made pond that had all sorts of garbage floating in it, beer cans, toilet paper, empty boxes. As I walked toward the grassy area inside the temple, Lars came down the ramp to meet us, I followed him into the temple just as Erik and Levi came back with the beers. We all went back and partied and joked, in my dream I even understood the Swedish that was spoken to me. It was fucking cool. I had a great day because of that dream.

I'm really beginning to get frustrated with the prospect of finding a drummer. I had sincerely hoped that we would be playing out this summer and after our first show, I thought we had definitely generated enough interest in our music style to have a good fan base, but alas, without a drummer, we really can't go on. We've taken a summer hiatus in hopes of finding a drummer by the fall and now we're all getting restless, wanting to play music, but still have not found anyone. The metal scene in NH, let alone in America is weak. If I could move to Europe, specifically Sweden or Norway, that would be the shitz because the musicians there just seem to have commoradery. Here it seems like everyone is out for themselves, and everyone thinks their style of metal is better than the next guy. WTF can't we have a community of people who all feel passionate about Metal and stick together and help each other out? I even called some guy who had a similar ad up as ours to find out if he had any luck and he said he hadn't and was surprised that I had called and we talked for a real long time about music and it was really great, but that's few and far between. I am at my wits end, we could be really great and people might even like what they hear if only we could get a beat.

Sky Bar Show

Last night was amazing! To say the least. Our band sounded tight, we pleased the crowd, we didn't fuck up overmuch and we got three gig offers!

Thanks to everyone who came out in support of us last night, it really means alot!

Forever's Fallen Grace and their shrubbery kicked ass with their high energy entertainment and Shroud of Bereavement has as usual, my total awe. I cannot wait to play live with you again.

JULY 1st! KCs Tap in Pawtucket, RI is our next gig. Yeah it's a haul, but Providence does metal good!

We may even be playing at the Worcester Paladium if the stars are aligned correctly and another offer was made to play at FireFly, a music festival in Vermont for metalers, goths and hippies alike.

Good show my band mates, you are the reason my life is complete.
